The art of obsession can be a risky business in Velvet Buzzsaw

Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo re-team with their Nightcrawler writer/director Dan Gilroy for a great-looking horror-thriller VELVET BUZZSAW.

‘All Art is Dangerous’ warns the tagline for VELVET BUZZSAW, a great-looking horror thriller from Dan Gilroy the writer/director of 2014’s brilliant Nightcrawler. However, that’s not the only thing you should take note of here. For this intriguing mystery set in the modern-day art world, Gilroy has re-teamed his dynamite stars from his 2014 hit, the fabulous Jake Gyllenhaal and the glorious Rene Russo. Nice.

With characters called Morf Vandewalt, Rhodora Haze, Piers and Coco, you can see there’s a tongue-in-cheek aspect to the film in the trailer that’s just debuted online. But that humour looks to sit neatly alongside a real dark element to proceedings, as we watch a collection of art critics, gallery owners and artists all become embroiled in an unnerving cat n’ mouse game with a supernatural force.

Gilroy’s third movie as writer/director, following Nightcrawler and 2017’s legal drama Roman J. Israel Esq. with Denzel Washington, displays once again his skill at great casting as well as presenting us with a powerful story, stylishly told. As for that cast, there’s the one and only John Malkovich, the incredible Toni Collette, British actress Zawe Ashton who made a telling supporting addition to Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals, and Billy Magnussen who did likewise in Adam McKay’s The Big Short.

VELVET BUZZSAW premieres shortly at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and then it’ll be streaming on Netflix and receiving a run in selected cinemas from early February. To get a taste of what’s in store, and before we work out just what that title means, check out the very bewitching trailer…
