Ben Stiller’s new version of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is divine

I loved Ben Stiller’s new version of THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY and think you will too.

Actor/director Ben Stiller made possibly his best feature to date with his sublime retelling of James Thurber’s classic tale THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY and now it’s out on DVD and Blu-ray, it gives you the perfect opportunity to find out why I loved it so. It’s certainly going to feature on my movies of the year list come December.

Ben Stiller as Walter and Kristen Wiig as Cheryl in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Ben Stiller’s Walter and Kristen Wiig’s Cheryl make a winning couple

Walter (Ben Stiller) lives a humdrum life, working for Life magazine in their photos department but his regular ‘zoning out’ as his sister Odessa calls it, sees him living a much more exciting fantasy existence in his head – he could be an explorer, an astronaut or just a plain brave guy rescuing a small dog from a burning building.

The one ray of light in his real world is his new co-worker Cheryl (Kristen Wiig), whom he hopes might notice him. His tentative pursuit of her involves a subscription to a dating website but he’ll need all the assistance of customer service guy Todd (Patton Oswalt) to make sure his profile hits the spot. Perhaps becoming involved in finding the image that will headline Life’s last ever published issue and finally meeting the famed photographer Sean O’Connell (Sean Penn) will make everything in his life fit into place.

All that and Shirley MacLaine too! She is quite amazing as Walter’s mum.

The acting is terrific, the images courtesy of director of photography Stuart Dryburgh – he shot The Piano!! – are extraordinary, Theodore Shapiro’s music is beautiful and the whole movie is just a life-affirming experience.
