The contest of the summer 2011 blockbusters has begun

Who’s going to come out as the winner in the SUMMER 2011 BLOCKBUSTERS CONTEST?

And so, it’s begun! The SUMMER 2011 BLOCKBUSTERS CONTEST. Who will emerge as the winner? Well, I’ll be casting my JSHmoviestuff critical eye over each of the big releases, selecting the champions from the wannabees, the pirates from the cowboys, the superheroes from the aliens and having some big fun along the way.

Chris Hemsworth as Thor in Thor

Chris Hemsworth is Thor

We’ve started with Kenneth Branagh’s THOR where Chris Hemsworth’s Norse prince learns humility and also becomes a pretty damn good defender of Earth in the process. With a supporting cast of the fabulous Natalie Portman, the one and only Anthony Hopkins, the terrific Stellan Skarsgaard and ace newcomer Tom Hiddleston from TV’s Wallander, it looks great.

Following closely on its heels has been the return of Johnny Depp’s wacky and wonderful Captain Jack Sparrow in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES. This time, Jack is caught up looking for the fabled fountain of youth and also finds himself caught in the middle of a battle between Ian McShane’s malevolent Blackbeard and his daughter played winningly I’m sure by Penelope Cruz. Sounds like fun for Jack and hopefully us too.

Arriving shortly is Matthew Vaughn’s X-MEN: FIRST CLASS where we’ll discover the origins of Professor X and Magneto. As they are played respectively by the brilliant James McAvoy and the fantastic Michael Fassbender, this bodes very well indeed. And Vaughn has assembled a crackerjack supporting cast around his two leads that includes the legend that is Kevin Bacon, Jennifer Lawrence (incredible in last year’s independent film Winter’s Bone), Nicholas Hoult (grown up a bit from About a Boy) and Mad Men’s January Jones. Could be electric.

But of all the trailers for this year’s summer blockbusters, the one I’m most excited by is CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER- history and fantasy seemed to have been thrillingly realised in this big-screen version of Marvel Comics’ superhero Steve Rogers, played with square-jawed brilliance and breathtaking daring-do by Chris Evans. Director Joe Johnston helmed the marvellous Rocketeer a while ago with a similar theme of a young pilot becoming a masked hero and so it looks like he’s the man for the job of bringing Cap to life. Joining Evans is an absolutely top-notch supporting cast including The Matrix’s Hugo Weaving, the iconic Tommy Lee Jones, the wonderful Stanley Tucci and the talented Hayley Atwell (so great as one of the leads in the 2007 film of Brideshead Revisited). Bring on July, I say!

The good, the bad and let’s hope not the downright ugly, will all have their day in the sun, so watch this space. In the meantime, check this out!!!
