Something stunning this way comes with Macbeth

Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard make a stunning team in this new screen version of Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

The completely dynamic screen pairing of Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard in a new screen version of Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth could be something really stunning.

MacbethHe has given electric performances in movies such as the 3 he’s collaborated with director Steve McQueen on – Hunger, Shame and 12 Years a Slave –  as well as a very funny supporting turn in Inglourious Basterds and a memorable romantic one in Cary Fukunaga’s great version of Jane Eyre.

And she is quite simply the finest actress on screen today – sorry Ms Streep, for the moment your crown has been taken. Her luminous portrayals in everything from the Oscar-winning La Vie en Rose (as Edith Piaf), to Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, A Good Year, Public Enemies and of course Jacques Audiard’s Rust and Bone and the Oscar-nominated Dardenne brothers’ Two Days, One Night have made Cotillard a hit in my book.

Now Justin Kurzel, director of the well received crime drama Snowtown, brings the 2 of them together as the Macbeths, a husband and wife whose ambition is their undoing. Nominated for the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes film festival and with a top-notch supporting cast including Paddy Considine as Banquo, David Thewlis as Duncan, Sean Harris as Macduff and Elizabeth Debicki as Lady Macduff, I think we can expect fireworks.
